Ai sol, ai vega, or radion xr30w gen 1? Was thinking about a lighting upgrade and wanted to know which way to go.

I don't have any at the moment. I would like to grow sps though.

Without supplementing the leds with say t5, you will not get both amazing growth and color. That is because leds are still a new technology and are just starting to cover the majority of spectrums required for color and growth. The only ones I personally am considering are the xr30w pros where they went from five to eight colors giving you wavelengths from 405nm - 660nm.

If I were to go with the ai's should I get the Vega or the Sol?

Several of the "new" LED fixtures are incorporating a very wide range of LED and filling all those gaps left by simpler/older systems. The GHL Mitras (new kid on the block) is growing amazing SPS and best of all people are seeing BETTER colors with the Mitras than with other light including MH. Keep in mind that the Mitras has 9 channels of light (each one independently controlled). That may not be the case for every system but here is what one SPS user stated after using the Mitras over his tank:

After one week of using Mitras, I have seen BETTER coloration with them than with halides or t5. I had AI LEDs before and I agree with you the colors were not as with MH and T5. But with Mitras, I am seeing those colors coming out like with MH.

then later he posted this as a follow-up
Honestly I am seeing some REDS AND VIOLETS I NEVER saw before not even with MH.

Check out the SPS tanks of rodneyri, ReefRockerLive, and Rotknee to see first hand real-world (not corporate sponsored or supported) SPS results.

Don't be afraid of LED for your SPS tanks. Not every LED will maintain (or even enhance) the SPS color and growth but some of them really are "all that".

*** the vegas don't have the serial port to connect to my apex controller. You have to buy the $80 controller from ai to control the vegas. Not too happy about that.

To the OP - do your own research and come to your own conclusions. Unfortunately, nearly every thread that even mentions LEDs has detractors, and quickly devolves into a peeing match.

My rule of thumb in this hobby is to try to read 4 or 5 forums, from various sites, before I drawn any conclusions about any products. Look for supporting links and scientific arguments, not vagaries and impassioned posts. Good luck!

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the radion xr30w gen 1's at $599/each. What turned me off about the ai vegas is that they recommend to mount 4" above the water line which means I can not mount them in my canopy the way I wanted, so I have to spend an extra $200 on ai mounting hardware. Also to be able to control them you have to buy the ai controller which is seperate at $80. So 2 fixtures $1,000+$200+$80=$1280. 2 radions that work out of the box and can mount them in my canopy=$1,200.
