LED Lighting fixtures replacing Metal Halides?

I heard some rumors, decided to post a thread in the lighting, filtration and other equipment forum and got a reply from the company themself, PFO. The fixtures are extremely expensive, the pictures aren't very impressive, atleast to me, they look like bad PC lighting. Hopefully they can get better pictures and some more details on the unit as far as output, coloration and growth on the corals. If these all are worthy to compare to MH lighting, this will mean, chillers won't be such a necessity, save ALOT of money because the leds last for years rather then months like MH lighting, and save on electricity. Although the prices is almost 10times the price of the equivalent MH, its the future savings that look like they are going to count.

What do you guys think? Is this something you guys would consider switching over to once the facts are straightened out and they are proven to be worthy to compare to MH?

Wow, looks impressive. I will be following this closely, I look foward to read the field testing on this lights. No chiller, lower electric bill, more light options with one fixture, more life on the bulbs....yeah why not!

there was a big thread with 1 guy that made his own led lighting, but it came down to, it just didnt have enough intensity. theyd probably work for softies and zoos at the very most.

i dont know if you are talking about the same one i saw.. but he made an LED array to cover a 5.5 or a 2.5 (forget which) and it put out higher PAR than MH... but it did cost him like $400 and hours of soldering...

they are called solaris they are very expensive 750.00 for a 24inch fixture PFO sells them and they say the are as intense as the mh setup. Have to see it myself to actually get convinced 48 set will cost about 2000.00
