Yep I saw this when it was published it does look promising in the grand scheme of things but I still say they are way over priced just like flat screen TVs were at first. If you want one wait a few years till the technology is spread through other suppliers and it gets cheaper. I have always said there were big changes coming in the way we light our tanks, one day MH even DEs will be a relic much like PCs are now becoming.
Originally posted by Reef4Fun I would like to see a picture of a tank lit up with the LED's vs one with the MH's.
Hmmm yeh I don't see the kind of light penetration through the sand like I see with halides. But hey thats what they said, they said it was equivalent to 250 wt 20Ks and you wont get deep depth lighting with 250wt 20Ks typically. Nice color rendering though.
It will be interesting to see what comes of the LED's. As far as shimmering my guess would be yes since they are a point source type of lighting. I doubt it will be to the same extent that halides do though since you are talking about a large point source vs a bunch of small ones.
I heard from an LFS that in Japan, they have these, and you cna move the individual LED lights around the fixture, so that you cna spotlight your corals with color discs. Big save of electricity, when you can put light only where it is needed.
Well actually the Japanese light kits are amazing but they are more about directing certain colors at specific corals in order to bring out the colors in just that coral. Look at some of the pics and you will get a better understanding of it. BTW those light rigs cost almost as much as studio lighting rigs.
yeah, but if your going to be in the hobby.... They said that the lights last 11 years before they drop below whatever level you want them to function at, to maintain healthy coral.
