LED UV on Magnavore Simplicity Reactor

I got a free upgrade with Magnavore Simplicity reactor by mistake or out of stock. I thought not muchof it at the time because it consisted of 3 blue LEDS that really aren't expensive however list price for the item is quite higher when I looked at it.

Can anyone state whether the UV sterilizer on this device is effective or not. I wouldn't have bought it but was considering using it. I glanced at lights to make sure they work. I saw dim blue lights under a plastic white film.

I have 140 gallon reef with ~15 gallon sump and 20 gallon refugium if that matters. I just was curous if UV sterilizer had any chance of being effective.

Thanks for any input

looking at the manual it mention at the oxidation at the titanium surface. I'll post next week in chemistry forum if no ones about it.

I'm a little confused what product you are talking about - you posted a link that contains several different products - none of which are UV sterilizers. If you are talking about the Simplicity UV-Catalytic Reactor, then that is NOT a UV-sterilizier - it utilizes a principle called advanced oxidation. Basically, when UV light is exposed to water with high dissolved oxygen in the presence of a catalyst, such as titanium dioxide, hydroxyl radicals are formed. These hydroxl radicals can then scavenge and oxidize organic molecules. This system uses UV light and pellets coated in titanium dioxide, and is designed to reduce organics in the water column - and works very similarly to ozone. UV light for sterilizers is in a slightly different wavelength than the one used in this process - so while they are both "UV", they are not at the same wavelength and do not both result in the same disinfection efficiency. In addition, the hydraulics of this unit are designed for oxidation, not disinfection. While this process does result in some disinfection, it is NOT a UV sterilizer, and should not be treated as such.
