Leptastrea Pruinosa

Lint Licker (does that mean you are into belly buttons?) -- what a great hitchhiker you got! I think I will have about four different ones when I am done. Justin -- dude -- we share a passion. I am a newcomer to the leps for sure. But I am definitely loving them.

Hey thats great L.L. Good headsup for everyone as well, thats the fourth time Ive seen/heard leps coming in with zooanthids.

This has inspired me to do some fragging! I have a particular uncommon morph that i have yet to see come in anywhere else, and think it deserves to be in circulation before anything bad happens that would prevent me from doing so. Wish me luck!

Both are nice color Lepta....

But to be honest I am starting to get a bit annoy with fish stores doing these ultra macro shots...I can't see them that up close even if they are in my tank...why can't they just do shots from "normal" distance ....

OK enough of my rant :)

Hey Justin-My first Leptastrea was a zoa hithiker, too. It has brownish skirts with a light bluish center. That started a mini obsession, too;).

I forgot you mentioned that awhile back! That's the fifth time then :D

Did it:twitch:

The colony and frag are sitting in the sump as we speak, and will put em back in the tank when just the actinics are on. Very very compact skeleton, along with a dremel it still requires a lil' hammer time ;)

I just hammered up my big colony of lavender/brown and greens:). I wasn't sure if the chisel was going to make it through it all. I trimmed up around the edges, so I almost can't tell I did anything.

Oh, this one is different than the other one I have. This one is very similar, but has a lavendar hue in the brown. If I didn't have both of them in the same tank, I'd say they were exactly the same. The other colony is still about 1/2 the size of this one. I've got a few decent sized pieces, but my really cool ones are frags (purple-ish center with green skirts are my favorites so far-thanks Sue;)).

Why not use a small wet ceramic saw? Make a nice clean cut and selling one frag from one of those beauties would probably pay for it!!!

Okay -- can you explain how this coral grows? Keep educating me! I have a Caribbean coral - a Stephanocoenia - it just slowly grows out -- it's 17 years old! Does this grow the same way? Is that why it grows in these big mounds or have they been put on rock?

This is true! I just dont cut and sell enough to justify, youd be more apt to see several blue moons pass before I get around to fragging one.

Sherri, its an encruster so it can be seen growing a few different ways. They can form lil mole hills if surrounded by sand/detritus. Otherwise will encrust to the limits of substrate and hospitipal conditions.

Maybe I do not understand this -- but the Caribbean coral I mentioned is also an encrusting coral but, I thought the way it grows is that it builds up layers of polyps so it slowly grows outwards with the lower layers dying and creating a skeleton. Is that not then considered an encrusting coral? Guess I should read Eric's book ...

This has started a mini-obsession with me as well. I had always heard of these, but never gave them a second thought until I had one in hand. They are pretty cool looking. I can get a pretty good deal on them too.

Okay -- I have identified the source of my stupidity! I read about Stephanocoenia quite a while ago when I first got it. There are obviously several kinds and they can be either massive or encrusting. I think years ago I read it as massive AND encrusting. The source of my confusion. Mine is obviously massive .... versus encrusting.

So I am working from home today for 2 important reasons: to vote and to receive my coral shipment. Got my stuff from Fraggle Reef and in it there is the blue eyed leps and they are looking sweet. All the way from CA to NH , acclimating for about an hour now and already starting to open up. I can't believe how hardy some of these corals are to ship and be ready to come out so quickly!
