The first one has a few problems as far as composition. As a snapshot it is fine. It is in focus and colors are good. If you want to show people your tang it is fine. If you don't mine a little critism. If you are striving for a professional or aristic look it needs some work. First, look up the rule of thirds. It is based on the golden rectangle. Its a concept that stated that certain areas of a photo draw your eye more comfortably than others. The subject should be placed in those areas. Google rule of thirds for a more verbose discription. (that is if you don't already know, I don'tt wish to insult you if you do) Based on this I would crop the image to take advantage of the rule of thirds.
Also, the background distracts from your subject. If you were to open your aperture more you could blur out the background. If you can't control your aperature, use the maco mode of the camera. That should do it. A quick photoshop of your photo shows what I mean. Like I said it was quick so its not the best.
And of course this is just my opinion. Not the gospel.
I just created a separate layer and blurred it with a gaussian blur filter. Then painted in the background (focused) layer with a history brush. There's better ways but I just did it quick and easy.
