I just don't see the appeal of a bb tank. There's so much life that thrives in the sand that is beneficial to supporting the microcosmic life inside your tank. Plus you never know what you'll end up looking at when you walk by your tank at 4:30 in the morning and you hear something strange!

BB makes life easy.

The fish I keep like high flow and BB also allows me to provide it w/out causing a sand storm.

Yes, sand beds house life and look better, but its all just a matter of preference. I prefer to run a BB tank after running several with sand beds over the years, but others may differ.

I agree that sand definitely looks better but houses more life then without? I don't know, my BB tank has more life in it then any sand tank I've ever owned. I am not saying this is true with all tanks, but my reef is just going crazy with life. I have more pods then I know what to do with, crazy snails, brittle stars etc growing everywhere. Most of the life comes from the rock I believe. The sand may help, but isn't necessary by any means. I'd use a starboard to have the look of sand somewhat but still be able to clean the tank easy and have better flow. Just my 2 cents.
