since there is a scoly thread here already figured I would ask a question.... How long have you had your scolys??? I have been thinking of getting one at reefapalooza in a couple months but have heard before they don't last long in a tank. Hate to drop 100-200 bucks on one for it to die within months to a year.

I've had one going on 4 years and it's doing great. It was fully mature when I bought it so who knows how old it actually is.

I've never heard anyone say they don't last long with the right care, which isn't particularly difficult. I did have a scoly that developed the beginnings of tissue recession but I was able to reverse it 100% successfully. There is a thread in this forum on "Rescue Corals" and it documents the rehab of a scoly or two if I recall.

I have seen them in decline first hand however. They're hardy but not 100% bulletproof. My LFS has a display tank with 2 (once) nice scolys that have pronounced tissue recession. They'll be goners in 6 months or so if something isn't done. He's doing everything wrong with them & IMO they would be easy saves.

I've offered the owner to take them off his hands for the appropriate "rescue discount". He acknowledges their condition and fact that they need some focused attention. But he has hesitated to give me a price yet as it seems his DNA will unravel if he ever has to lose a dime on anything.

I digress. steallife, I think what you have heard is inaccurate. I'd jump on any good deals if I were you. IME scolys are hardy and easy to care for as long as you feed them, keep them in the right light & current, keep them from getting stung, etc. Just the basics. Let's see what others have to say.

Question for the group: How long have you owned a scoly. Have they been easy to keep?

I have two. A war paint and an orange with a couple green streaks. 1yr and 8 months respectively. I've also never heard of them not lasting in tanks.

Also, the orange one had a ring of dead skeleton exposed when I bought it unknowingly since it was nice and puffed up at the LFS. I was pretty upset about it at first, but it has since grown tissue over the whole skeleton. I only feed mine once a week, that's if I even remember.

I read a thread here on reef central one time and had a LFS tell me sometimes the scolys are 50/50.... but really you could say the same with any coral. For me though its just the price has always scared me but I have been in the hobby for years and keep many corals successfully I think its time to give one a try. I know last year there where a few vendors with nice scolys for 100 bucks so I am hoping they are there again for me to grab one.

I've been waiting for my scolys to close up a bit to look like typical ones, but they for the most part stay really puffy/meaty. I did get a really cool shot of the war paint though.

I have my scolys for about 8 months now, so not that long to answer questions about long term health yet. But so far been pretty easy to keep (fingers crossed). From my experience, low flow is a must. They puff up a lot better when I moved them to lower flow area.
