Lets See Those TUNZE Set-ups!

Lately I have been questioning my Flow situation. I have a total of about 6000gph in circulation in my 120 but I feel I could be doing a bit better to help keep detritus off the rocks.

I'd love to see how some of you have your Tunze set-up.

Thanks!

It's my 180, rather than my 120. Of all my tanks, it has, without question, the best flow pattern:

180-0101.jpg

Three 6100 Streams on a multicontroller in sequential mode. Peak flow (combining the Streams with the sump return) is over 10,000 gph.

The configuration of the Streams produces a surging whirlpool effect in the tank.

Thanks Weatherman... I love it.
I do have one Tunze, 2 seio's (buried in the corners blowing water under the rock) a return spraybar behind the rock and a closed loop. Im just thinking I may need more flow...

Either another Tunze OR changing my closed loop pump for a DART.

Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m thinking of adding a fourth 6100 to my 180 (I already have one on order). Looking down from the top, the current Stream configuration generates a clockwise rotating whirlpool, which surges, then stops, then surges then stops.

If I can figure out how to do it, Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢d like to generate a clockwise whirlpool, followed by a counterclockwise whirlpool, then back again. That would represent a significant improvement over my present setup. Mass flow of water, rather than turbulence, is what really keeps detritus in suspension.

If I can't figure out how to do it, my 155 and 120 can always use more flow.

I am always amazed how crystal clear your tanks are. Im so jealous! Do run any filter socks? I forget if you do or not.

Didn't you just ask me this question somewhere else? :D

It's a trick of photography. The water contains microbubbles and suspended particulates. They just don't show up in the image because the contrast isn't tweaked high enough.

I use 100 micron filter pads to clean the water of both bubbles and particulates. I clean the pads once a day to prevent the pads from becoming a source of nitrate.

I new I asked you this, and I remember the particulate pic...but I forgot if you ran socks...you run pads. See? Thats why I asked! :)

Im running both. Tonight, I just cleaned out my sock (waiting for 3 more to arrive) and changed my filter pad material. I made a hang-in box out of eggcrate that I slide between my first set of baffles. That way if my skimmer or sock miss anything the box will catch it. Im gonna go to the craft store and buy a bag of floss...its a lot cheaper I think.

Great picture of your 180. I am just curious where you would place the fourth Tunze Stream in your 180 Gal tank? I am trying to figure out the placement of pumps for the best circulation in the tank. I am also considering Tunze Stream for my 125. I heard nothing but good about these pumps. A little expenses.

The fourth one would go on the right overhang next to the back wall of the tank, so Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢d have a pair of Streams on the right side acting as a mirror image to the pair on the left.

The objective would be to have them alternate back and forth, like this:

Left-rear: on; Right-front: on; Left-front and Right-rear: off
(To produce a clockwise circulation in the tank)

Left-front: on; Right-rear: on; Left-rear and Right-front: off
(To produce a counter-clockwise circulation in the tank)

I have problem with my one Tunze...

Every 20 or 30 seconds, it spits out air bubbles. Its not near enough to the surface to pull any in either...

They are keeping me very busy! ;) I never thought I would be happy to see my mother in law, but she came to stay with us for a few days so I could catch up on the tank maintainence. My tanks have taken a beating for the last few weeks.

I would just ask Roger. I'm sure he can narrow down the causes.

How's the tank and family?

The bubbles, IMO, are built up inside the chamber when algae grows on strainer/pump. They create 0/2 and it is pulled into the strainer where it is trapped somewhere before the impeller. When the bubble out grows the space it gets pulled into the impeller creating a bubble storm. After cleaning the pump it does not happen for quite a while after.

Just my theory.

The tank and family are all doing great.... Im dealing with a bit of bubble algae but Im nippin it! Other than that I have NO algae and the rock is gorgeous.

Who's Roger?
