LF: Saltwater Tank Equipment

Hello, new to the forum. Looking to convert my 55 gallon freshwater tank to a saltwater tank. Anyone know where I can get some good deals on lights, sumps, skimmers, etc... basically the necessary equipment to get it running. I plan to eventually have coral in the tank with live rock and fish.

i have a light overflow and rock all for sale really cheap and a sump can be had from like $40 if yo go the diy route

Thanks for the reply. The rocks and corals I will wait to get because I want to get all the equipment up and running first and get the tank started, then add them. I'm not too confident in my ability to make a DIY sump though. Looks simple but I don't have the equipment to cut class or fiberglass, etc.

That's what this forum is for welcome.....I'm sure somebody in blowhard will chime in.

Hey Phil. Welcome! Take it slow, do lots of research, ask lots of questions. There are lots of us that have extra equipment that could get you started. Most important is that you set it up right the first time. That will save lots if time, money and frustration. We are here to help. Where are you located?

Hello, thanks for the welcome...

I'm located in Tamarac/North Lauderdale. I've been on the DIYFishKeepers forum for a while asking questions, getting tips and suggestions. Watching a lot of different YouTube videos and reading different sites/articles online. I've been checking Craigslist daily to see if I can find any deals there. Just tough because I am getting married in January and my fiancee has no problem with my hobby, she even enjoys looking at the tank I currently have when she comes over, but she doesn't want me putting myself and our future into debt over the hobby. So I am trying to be patient with the whole process.

well i live close to you and would deff be glad to show you how to set up the sump if you want. btw i think you just messaged me off craigs list. if so the questions werent stupid at all :)

Just checked my email, yeah, that was me lol. Doing a lot of research, trying to find as much in one bundle as possible only because I'm afraid if I mix and match from multiple tanks I may get stuff that doesn't work well together. But if I get it all from a successful tank, especially of the same 55 gallon size as mine, I would feel more comfortable that it would pretty much be a moving it from their tank to mine process.

text me off the add and we will talk about it. the sump takes like 20 min to make and like $40 of materials. the only thing you would then need is rocks (i have) sand, a return pump and water (you can have, i can test it to see if its even worth having).

on your question my tank was the 55 with a overflow to a 20l sump/refuig i built. that was my filtration :) coupled with a skimmer that i sold and some chaeto, rocks and sand there isnt much els you will need.
