LFS can order "red" or "blue" peacock mantis?

Hey there!

I am currently getting ready to set-up a tank for a small smasher mantis (hopefully, I am in western Canada and we only seem to have one website that lists anything other than a peacock mantis occasionally).

Today I swung by my saltwater LFS to say hello and ask to be added to a call list in the event they had a small smasher come in.

Then on a whim I asked "can you order in peacock mantis shrimp?" And the shop owner not only said yes, but replied

"Oh yes anytime. I can order red or blue ones."

This seemed weird to me because I could have sworn I read somewhere that peacock mantis never change their color BUT that n. wennerae which are often mistaken for young peacock mantis do turn red or blue depending on the depth they are caught at?

Can anyone confirm? Part of me wants to order one of these "red peacock mantis" just in the hopes that it actually isn't one and turned out to be n. wennerae or some other small smasher... But then if it does turn out to be a peacock* mantis shrimp that will be unfortunate as I am not able to have a 40 gallon tank on my apartment at this moment.

never heard of those i have seen some with more reddish/browm coloring versus the normal greenish. then again i have gotten Gonodactylus chiragra a few times after having an lfs swear up and down they can get anOdontodactylus scyllarus for me only to be dissappionted on day of pick up.Neopgonodactylus Wennerae are cool and just as brutal of a smasher as a big peacock o chiraga mantis no issue taking out fiddler or redclaw crabs mine got lazy and figured out how to just yank out blue leg hermits straight from the shell :ROFLMAO:.also if you happen to find one at an lfs be sure to look for shell rot on it cant remember if it can be cured or not.pretty sure the mantis section on this site has most of the answers your looking for it was a gold mine for me years ago before my stroke and i kept around 10 different species at any given time. i remember a biologist i think he was who kept mantis shrtimps also the old guy knew alot and was active on the mantis forum.Neopgonodactylus Wennerae do perfectly fine inside a nano tank. if you end up with a spearing type they do better with a deeper sand bed so they can pop out and snatch a baby damsel mantis style. i feel like setting up some mantis tanks again:ROFLMAO: tbs sellsNeopgonodactylus Wennerae all the time
