Lifespan of Pump Impellers for Protein Skimmers

I just wanted some input from the community as to what skimmer pump is best with a lasting impeller. I have been using Sedra KSP-3500 with my ASM G-2 skimmer for the past 10 years. It seems every 2-3 years of service, the magnet of the impeller expands and gets stuck in the pump.

Replacement cost $40 for the impeller. Should I get another skimmer?

LIFEREEF! If and when the pump dies, you just buy another return pump of your choices. Brand or type doesn't matter, as long as it moves enough water.

You can swap out, possibly with some small modification for a better pump. Sicce, eheim, or Tunze have skimmer pumps sold separately with higher quality impellers that will not need replacement as often. Just need to vinegar soak them every few months. Just look for one of the above with similar size fittings and outputs as your Sedra.

Most newer skimmer pimps are more efficient as well as more reliable. Replacing the pump takes a bit of research. Do a search here and you should see what some others have used.

Those Sedra pumps are well known for that issue, either the 3500 or the 5000
The “good” thing about the swollen 3500 impellers, is that they tend to fit fine in the 5000 volute in case of an emergency situation.
You can try a Sicce pump or get a DC that you can tune.

Paying the cost of a new pump is almost like buying a new skimmer with some additional expense. Any other suggestions?

Not sure. It’s really up to you. You have to look at my higher impeller cost vs your pump use more electricity. This hobby gets you one way or another. Lol. I love my asm skimmer with gate valve mod back in the days.
