Light, but strong hood material?

I was considering setting up an 8x2x2 with a 2' high hood.

I have a 2' hood on a 4ft tank made of marine ply and it is pretty heavy! I just wondered what everyones hoods are made from? I want something that is strong, but wont put loads of pressure on the glass!

Are all yours resting on the top?

When I had lights in my canopy, the canopy was made from Oak.

Well actually most of the room is oak, so it would match nicely. Is oak heavier than pine of something like that? I think its more expensive?

Oak is more solid and less prone to indent I believe. It will be a bit more money to go solid oak, but oak ply or veneer is available.

I am planning on using oak for mine next week....well, hopefully next week.
