Can you ever have too much light? I would say if you can handle the heat issues that come along with with mh's go for it.

I have two 400 w mh's over a 58 in a hood. Beautiful and warm. I also have a chiller going and a fan as well. I agree with waverz, can't have too much light, or at least you can't with one 250.

I have a 150 HQI over a 40 breeder and it's not enough. I'd say for most applications a 250 would be the perfect size!

how high above the water should the light be?

High enough that the light spread hits most of the tank (i.e. no dark sides)...and make sure it high enough to not heat the tank too much...

Jeez, here I am saving for decent lights and others apparently have so many they don't know what else do with them. A problem I wish I had. haha
