is there a limite to how far a mh can be over a tank cause i have a 250 over a 29 gal bio and its about 15 inches over the water is that to far?

Hey Johnny, seem's a little high, but its best to start it high and move it down based on the corals reactions. Usually you can tell if they aren't getting enough light by washed out colors.

Make sure to keep an eye on heat. That size of light will quickly warm up the water.
