i want to get some a MH setup canopy for my 55 g tank so i can put some corals in it

what is the best brand to get? what would fit me the best?
i want to hang it from the cieling above the tank

should i get some daytime lights and then some moon lights for the night?

It all depends on what you are trying to get out of your reef. I'm assuming you are doing stony corals. If not, no reason to do MH. Assuming so, do you want growth with less coloration, or slower growing with brighter colors? 6500K bulbs are the fastest growth, but by far the ugliest colors. Almost noone uses these for reefs. The next major step up is the 10000K bulbs, which will still have excellent growth and more color than 6500K, but still blands the corals a bit. I personally use 14000-15000K bulbs. Still better growth than 20000K, but better color than 10000K. I like to think of them as the best of both worlds. If you don't care about quick growth and only want it for aesthetics, 20000K is the way to go. Very blue and very deep coloration of the corals.

I recommend VHO actinic supplement also. I have 2X110W VHO super actinic and 2X150W DE(double ended) 14000K/15000K and it is well over what is needed for my 55G. Almost 10W/Gal. I personally like this choice, just watch out for heat. Mine is called Acrolight by PFO. Very nice system, but somewhat expensive.

I hope you are'nt keeping a seahorse with an anemone.:(

hey cschweitzer, i'm getting ready to set up a system just like your 55. do you have heat issues? do you have to run a chiller, or can you get by w/ fans?

hey Cozart it sounds like he is thinking about getting lights. I am sure he will be able to answer those questions once he gets MHs (if he decides to). I run a 65 as you know and have serious heat problems. It forced me to get a chiller. I ran fine without a chiller before the lights but I changed my fan setup. I am going to work on my fans this weekend to try and get the maximum cooling from them. Hopefully it will limit the amount of time the chiller kicks on. BTW always blow the fans into your hood. I tried blowing them out and the tank heated up extremely quickly. Well good luck to you all. I hope you can get by without dropping hundreds on a chiller like I had to.
