ok im prepairing to start building my canopy for my 90 gal, my question is how far from the top of the tank should my metal halide's be? i was thinking 10 to 12 inchs

I have mine at about 7 or 8 inches, but they get some saltwater spray on them, so a little higher would probably be better. I think it would also depend on the depth of your tank and the power of the lights.

ok the canopy is built and mh are installed they sit 7 to 8 inchs from the water surface the canopy still needs to be sanded and stained, my cuts were a little funky due to not having access to a table saw for perfact cuts but it will due its job, a friend of mine came by and put me in a 4 way outlet on its own 20 amp circut.
here are some pics

Canopy and new lights look great. A little finish work on the canopy and you will be done. Then your wifey can get the clam she wants.
