Lights on a nano

I am wanting to setup a 20 gal high with zoos, mushrooms, etc. What is the mininum wattage I should use? Thanks.

well if you're looking for a "watts per gallon" rule...throw that out the window because that will be completely useless.

i'm assuming a 20g high is 20" long like a 10g? assuming i'm right, there are not really any t5's that will "fit" your tank (sure, you can have bulbs too long if you dont mind them hanging over a bit).

T5 HO lights are very good, probably my fav. Over that size tank, 4x24w t5 HO would be great and you'd be able to grow anything (and for just shrooms and zoos and softies, 2x24 would be fine).

However like i said, you wont be finding any t5 High Output (HO) shorter than 24".

On my 16g bowfront, it has the same length as a 10, so 20". I started with a 2x40w PC (power compact) setup...worked "ok" for softies, but nothing had color and it didnt really flourish.

I now have a single 150w MH (metal halide) and i can grow anything under the sun with that. I find that to be a perfect amount of light for that tall and long of a tank. Its able to penetrate to the bottom just fine and MH has very nice color.

I guess to answer your question though, you can get by with 2x40w PC and it should be fine, but like i said, dont expect great color/growth rate out of anything under PC's. It just aint happenin.

I have a 20 high too. Its 24 inches so it will fit small T5 fixtures. I currently am using an Aquaticlife 4*24 fixture with 4 moon lights and I'm pleased. I haven't taken PAR readings or anything but everything in my stocking list below is doing good. I would stay away from PCs. They just don't have the output to keep a lot.

On our 20g tall we had a 4x24 T5 fixture and had no problem at all with shrooms and zoas. In fact, we had to give they away because they were spreading too much.

t5 imo are the best choice. especially on smaller thanks they give great colors, lower heat than a metal halide. with 4 bulbs you could come up with some really good bulb combinations to give you just the right color that youd prefer. 4x24 would be great.

If you're just planning on keeping zoas and mushrooms you won't need a lot of light. You could get away with a 2 x 24 watt T5 setup. I wouldn't go with a 150 watt MH unless I was planning on keeping SPS.
