I run a GRI520 on my 125 reef. When I first installed it as a noob, I plumbed the returns using 3/4" hard pvc line into a 2 port manifold followed by 3/4" spa-flex to the tank. This runs from a basement sump up the typical 10' or so to the return lines. I was running 3 lines after a split and capped the lines with 3 hydor rotating "wavemakers".
No problems, but not a lot of flow, even without the hydors. I have a Tunze Stream in the display which provided adequate movement, but needed more.
Well, after a bit of research and discussion, I decided that going thru a 1" line from the GRI all the way to the display, teeing off through a 1"to 3/4" tee would create more flow. Holy cow, did it ever......in anticipation, I also bought 2 penductors right here on RC and when I added one the flow was tremendous...(sort of freaked my bubble coral, though).
Anyway, the issue is that I have created a moderately pitched hum, or whine, it's tough to describe. I can modulate it a bit by opening/closing a small "tap" line that feeds the UV line....I run a slow flow through it but don't run the UV...
Any plumbing experts out there that can prescribe how to eliminate the whine?.....heck, it must be noticable as my hearing impaired spouse was walking around this morning, opening doors, looking for the noise...LOL....
I confessed and told her I created the "buzz" myself and would fix it (famous last words) tonight.
I'm thinking that I might need to "anchor" the 1" hard pvc to wll studs using hangars, and/or use rubber isolators where-ever the pipe contacts the floor or other items?
Advise needed and appreciated.
