can anyone give me a link to a good thread on building an external overflow. im thinking of setting up a 10g with one. thanks (btw i tried the search but couldn't really find much)

If you want a HOB (Hang on Back) then this thread is not for you. But if you want a very clean install and are willing to drill the tank then here is my thread.

External Overflow

Here is a couple pictures of mine.. I've done about 5 tanks this way.. All of my tanks have external overflows.. Including my 180.. But you wont be able to do it to a 10 Gallon.. Almost all of them are tempered glass.=can't drill.. Plus even if you did the glass is so thin it breaks sooner or later.. Sorry..But if you move up to a 15 or 20 you should be ok.. Here are some pictures..

Thanks,

The tank has been up and running for over a year, no problems, until last night.

I use a check valve to stop the siphon instead of a hole in the return to break the siphon. I know I should have just drilled the little hole!!

I turned off the pump to feed and soon hear water trickling. I jump up notice that the water level in the tank is going down and restart the return pump. So less than a quart of water ended up on the floor. I will be drilling a siphon break hole tonight!!

Live and learn.

I'd feel real nervous doing this on a 10 gallon tank. I don't think it would support the weight of the overflow, especially after drilling.
