Link to Magnetic Rock?

A while back someone posted a link to a site selling magnetic rock for mounting on the sides/back of the tank walls. Anyone still have that? I am thinking a piece or two of that would work/look great in my new Solana 34.
 
keep us updated on this. How you like it, Pictures when you get it going. and would you buy more or is it a waste of money.

the idea sounds pretty neat, so looking forward to your updates.
 
I will be starting a new build thread as soon as the new correct tank arrives. I will definitely post/comment.
 
Didnt someone else post a link where you can buy the magnets if you wanted to DIY? I have a couple of pieces of LR, a tile saw and a plan.......:D
 
Andy has a good source for magnets. I will see what this one looks like and see if there is any benefit to DIY vs ready made.
 
DIY! Its just a magnet, glue and sand... I considered marketing this concept about 10 years ago... I didn't because I figured people would see and and just do it themselves! Ceramic magnets work just fine and they dont corrode.
 
For under 30 bucks, is not worth my time to do so. Good magnets are almost half the price alone. I love DIY, but sometimes, easier just to buy.

My order should be here early next week and will see how they are.
 
what do you mean by good magnets? You can pickup very strong ceramic magnets at a crafts store for a couple bucks. IMO you dont even need to glue sand on them because the coral is going to encrust anyway.
 
I got and was interested in the actual rock, not plugs. Besides, the magnets should be coated and rare earth. Standard magnets will not hold much of anything.

The rocks Michael is talking about are 10" in length..so glueing is not realistic..perhaps you are thinking of the magnetic plugs versus magnetic rocks?

Michael is also spot on about the magnets. Just because a magnet is cheap doesn't mean it's right for the application, or that it will hold up. Rubber coated rare earth are preffered, and those cost a bit.
 
Mag drive pumps have a ceramic magnet... Ive had no problem using standard ceramic magnets of all shapes and sizes to hang small rocks and frags...
 
The ceramic magnets in a pump are experiencing very different forces... coated magnets save your glass/walls from scratching... and last but not least, mostly a matter of preference. Everyone has a different one. :)
 
Mag-Rock arrived in the mail today. It is very light with a negative buoyancy. Magnets look good and are coated. They do not seem particularly strong, but hold the rock up fine. Will have to see when I get some corals on it, but that will not be for some time. I have it temporarily in the 125 to start getting some bacterial and Coraline growth. Overall I am pleased. The shape seems random so that if I ordered another, it may not be a duplicate. Could probably DIY for less than $29.98 and shipping, but I can find other things to work on in the tank for now.

gooch, Those look pretty, but the cost is insane! 4 times the cost of what I got and only moderately larger. While I'd like stronger mags, it has been holding fine and I think will be no problem as long as I do not try to mount something huge... even then maybe OK.
 
Yeah they are pricey but not insanely priced when you think about it. I got one just like the one you have and it was crumbling apart. I thought it was a waste of money. I never put it in the tank. The ceramic ones have so much more strength. I was at a friends house and we put a five pound coral on it. It was bigger than the station. His tank had 1/2" glass.

The ceramic ones are solid and wont crumble apart. There is two sure grip 100's in the large ones and the Sure Grip 100's retail for $35 each at Premium. Remember you get what you pay for.
