Does anyone have a link to any lists? or is the list so short someone could just tell me? particulary interested in any mandarin/clam problems

Mandarin gobies and clams are ok.
The place I get my clams actually has mandarin gobies and sixline wrasses with the clams.

You can also list the fishes you want to keep with the clam and someone from the board will chime in whether it will work or not.

yes it would be best if you let us know what you have and want to keep with them and then we could answer your question better.

how often do they close on fish? I saw on another post a picture of a clown who got his face stuck in a closed clam!

Haha I honestly couldn't tell you how often they close on fish.
I've only read that 1 story about a clam killing the clown. My fishes often rest on my clams and none have been killed.

As for inverts that someone else would have to answer.
My clam tank has 2 dwarf lion fish, reef stone fish, leaf fish, and a black foot lion fish. I am un-able to keep shrimps haha.

the shrimp are iffy. The clown that got clamped was mine and he was picking on the clam so he had it coming. My other 2 clowns actually host in my clams.

clams and seahorses are a no no! they are lazy swimmers and will try and rest on the clam when its open and get caught when it closes.

I have a large Foxface that I keep my eye on. He doesn't really seem to be picking on any of the corals so much as picking at bits of algae that end up on the corals.

I was a bit nervous when I added my first (and only, thus far) clam to the tank and watched the situation very closely. About 15 minutes after the clam opened and began expanding the Foxface came in close and nipped at the mantle.

The clam snapped shut on the Foxfaces "nose" and held it for a few seconds until the Foxface managed to pull loose. I thought one or the other was going to have to go.

But, since that first incident, if the clam reacts to a shadow by pulling in just a bit, the Foxface dashes behind the rock. It seems to be afraid the clam is going to eat it and still won't come near the clam.

I may have just gotten lucky, but it seems like the clam took care of itself.

One other thing, if you look in Scott Michael's book "Marine Fishes" he specifies for each species whether it is "reef safe" and lists quite a few fish as a danger to clams.

Skinz, when you say shrimp, do you just mean Cleaners and Peppermints? How about a Coral Banded or Sexy?

Also, does anyone have any input on these fish? A few I have now, others I plan on getting in the future.

1) Tomini Tang
2) Scooter Blenny (I assume these would be cool since Mandarin's are fine, just thought I'd double check)
3) Banded Pipefish
4) Lawnmower Blenny

I am leery about the coral banded shrimp but alot of people have them with clams. I have never ever heard of sexy shrimp causing troubles with clams. The tomini Tang may pick at the shell trying to eat algae, hence stressing the clam. Once again lots of people have tangs with no problems, just make sure it has lots of algae to eat and it may not ever pick at the clams shell. I have a scooter blenny in my tank and I think they are great additions, no harm to clams at all. The lawnmower may also pick at algae on the clam, I have one in my tank and he does just fine.

Thanks for your input, Skinz.

Just to clarify and this might be a noob question, but when you say you're leery about the Coral Banded, are you worried about the clam's safety or the shrimp's?

Anyone have any insight on the Pipefish?

I have 3 clams currently, 2 maximas and 1 crocea. I have a Foxface, clown, sixline, scooter, bluejaw trigger, scopas tang all in there with them. The most they ever do is clean the outsides of the shells on occasion when necessary. In fact, when I got my second maxima it had quite a case of bubble algae on the shell and the Foxface and Scopas took care of it in 24 hrs. Didn't even knock the guy over! I also have a couple peppermints and a fire shrimp in there and the most I have ever seen them do is clean around the mantle, never really bothering them even to the point of closing up. Did have a bi-color blenny I had to part with as he was bothering the crocea. I would not recommend them in a tank together. My royal gramma is occasionally a poker at my maxima also, but not a real pest, he will just close up for a minute or two and then open right back up again. Hope this is some good info for someone out there!
