Live Rock and PVC

Who out there uses PVC pipe to support the live rock on the sand bed. For years I just placed the rock on the sand bed with nothing underneath it. New tank set up and was wondering who uses PVC or does the majority do what I have done for years.

What is the benefit of using PVC pipe as a support? I've only heard of people using eggcrate to even the weight of the rocks on the bottom of the tank.

I used 2-4" depending on the rock size. I drilled a bunch of holes in it to allow water flow so you dont get a dead spot. On the 3" or larger, I 'd not only drill holes, but cut a few iches out of the PVC so you make a C shape. Digging fish can excavate out the center of the pipe and have a nice cave to stay in.

In general I would basically place the rock on the glass and then pour the sand in afterward. I see no need for any support.

The only exception being that if the bottom-tier rocks are not stable on the glass, I will use wads of epoxy putty to MAKE them stable.
