Does anyone have any experience with running a HOB filter with live rock in it instead of a flyer sock or other materials like that? I saw it in a YouTube video and thought it looked interesting. Does it make sense to do that?
I've seen people run just LR in their HOBs and also just chaetoalgae with a clip light for a DIY mini refugium. Adding LR rubble is just another good way to add surface area for beneficial bacteria. As long as flow over the rocks remains high this is not a bad idea.
It depends on what you are looking to accomplish because they will do different things. A filter sock sock will polish the water by trapping stuff. Rock will add to the biological filtration.
