We have a180G build in progress - for this size tank, do you recommend placing the bottom layer of Live Rock on egg crate or directly on the glass bottom of the tank? (Oceanic 180G RR)
If you are going to have any sandsifters like starfish or certain gobies then I would use eggcrate. It will keep your rock from falling. If you are going bare bottom I would not use it. I used it when I upgraded and I am glad I did, I have a sand sifting goby and he loves to burrow under the rocks.
if you place your rock directly on the bottom and then add sand you will not have a problem , at least a few large base peices this way will keep anything negative from happening.

Yes I will have a 2-3" sandbed, but only after the LR cures for a while. That way I can siphon LR debris off the barebottom - will add sand when the LR begins to be near end of its cycle.
I will have one large (4") orange-spotted goby who loves to dig under rock... maybe I should just place the rock diirectly on the glass, as it is in my 95G Wave Tank.
yes definately place the bottom layer of rock directly on the glass that way your gobie cannot dig under it, just around it, then as i stated earlier add your sand bed in around the rock
Here's the base rock on the bare glass bottom... This is cured rock, but I am going to allow it to cycle. My LFS has a shipment of premium Fiji rock coming in next week that will let me build on this base...
It doesn't look like 90# of rock, does it?
There is another piece of trim that matches the custom stand that goes around the bottom of the tank...I removed it while adding saltwater, as the stand isn't finished and sealed yet (waiting for the doors).
