Do you need LR in seahorse's tanks? I have read places you shouldnt use it, so im quite confused.

Thanks

you dont NEED live rock, the few who say not to use it say that because of hitchikers (organisms that are living on that rock that could cause problems, but at the same time could be good hitchikers). I guess its really your own opinion to whether you want it or not.

Nope, don't need live rock, but it can be used with all horses except dwarfs. Hitchiker hydroids are a real issue with dwarfs.

If you are assured that the rock is hitchiker free, but the only way I know that you could do that is to start with dead base rock.

So if i wasnt to use LR, what would be my best bet for filteration on the tank and how would i cycle it. Hardy fish? also what do you guys think about mixing banded pipefish with seahorses? thank you

some people use rock as their main filtration others will use a sump, or HOB or canister its personal preference. Best way to cycle the tank is to get a few pieces of LIVE ROCK, this rock carries the bacteria needed and will help to cycle the tank. Also feeding the tank (adding a source of ammonia) is another great way, some use fish but it can be very stressfull on fish and there for more don't. I'm not an expert but i'm pretty sure its a bad idea to mix seahorses and pipefish

Dosnt LR need very good flow and seahorses need very slow flow. How does that work out? sump i guess. Also i have a internal filter, what can i do (filter media wise) to make this sufficant from the system?
