Live Rock

I am just starting up a 125. Looking to get some live rock at a reasonable price. If you have any please let me know. Also how many #'s can I get away with on the start up and what should I work my way up to? I look forward to joining the club in Jan. Nice to read all of the good info on this site.

I am in no way saying stay away from buying from local reefers as you can often times buy it for $1/lb and get GREAT rock, ready to go and pest free, but I recently chopped some rock up that I had gotten locally and it was like black death inside, I would say maybe this is normal... but it isn't ;c).

I would consider starting with something like Marcorocks.com, ive ordered from him, and you get a good bit of rock, and it is dry so you are not paying for water weight. Then just buy 10-20 lbs from a local shop like salty critter, or a local reefer (there are some good ones in the elyria area with a lot of stuff). 6 months down the road your tank will be good to go.

Also 1.5lbs/gallon is pretty standard starting place, you go up or down from there depending on if you want a lot of open space or not.

I just ordered 45# of fiji from Live Aquaria for about $4.00 a pound shipped and so far I'm impressed (I got some pics if interested). Salty and Aquatic Tech are really the only places I have seen good rock at for a reasonable price.

Salty usualy has some really nice dry rock for $2 a #. The only store i buy my live rock from is Aquatic tech. You pay big doller for it, but he uauslly has some very very nice stuff. other wise it's always from locals.

plantankerously, Heres some pics of my Live Aquaria order

Seems to have a lot of Coraline, sponges and other life, just have to see what makes it after the cure. I was impressed because its better than any thing I've seen in the Akron/Canton area as far as rock.

my god finally I see water in your tank :). Are you going BB, what happened to all that sand you bought?

Just put the egg crate in so not to break the bottom when I drop a rock. Once I cure the rock and cycle I will aquascape and put the sand in. Sand looks to good not to have it.

$212 incl. shipping. Its about 4.70 a lb a little high but the one I wanted was $60 cheaper but has been out of stock forever. This is the premium fiji probably the only difference is more coraline. LA and the mail order out of Bevercreek (cant think of the name) had 45 lbs boxes for $79-$89 plus shipping) I would have went that route but no one has it in stock.

I would say whether its from a LFS or from a local hobbyist, LR always has the potential to introduce parasites, pathogens and/or unwanted hitchhikers. Unless its dry rock, LR is a virtual breeding ground for both good and bad microfauna. IME, there really is no way to effectively guarantee a rock is clean unless you kill it all off which ultimately defeats the purpose. Therefore, if you know what kind of rock you are looking for (Tonga, Fiji, Caribbean, etc.) I would hunt down the best deal. Also, if you are buying online, don't bother paying extra for "cured" as it will still require cycling as there will be die off in transit.
