Live sand bed

Ok, so im new to the hobby and have a question, I have a 2x2x2 60g cube and a 125g tank, both are currently collecting dust. My wife wanted to set one up as a project we can do together. I don't have all the money required to to set up a reef so I am going to do a FO in the cube. I understand lighting in a FO is for visual aesthetic purposes but as far as live sand do i need to use it to help with filtration or not? Also what is the best way to clean a tank to get it ready to fill?

You can slean the tank with water and vinegar. You do not need the sand though it will help. I suggest adding some LR it will help with filtration. You can buy some dry base rock cheap and seed with some LR and it will keep costs down. The rock will also help the tank from looking empty and it will provide some places for fish to hide.
You will need to do water changes regularly and will still need to have phs and heaters in the tank.

I prefer a sand bed for a variety of reasons. But I also just like the look of them. :) Since you are going FO, I'd probably stick with a shallow sand bed and vacuum it at water changes. My tank started as a fowlr but like many others grew into a reef tank. Either way sooner or later you'll get hit by the coral bug and want to do a reef. It's better to set it up right from the beginning rather than having to start from scratch when you decide to keep a reef.

A vinegar bath will be fine for cleaning your tank(s). That and a little elbow grease with a clean razor blade. :)
