Longhorn cowfish

I have a 50 gallon reef tank and just got a longhorn cowfish that is 2.5 to 3 inches. I have been told I will be able to keep him for a year or two before I need to get rid of him or get a bigger tank. Do you all agree? He seems very happy and is very personable

Those fish are so adorable! My concern is what will happen to him once he outgrows your current tank. Upgrades are easier on paper than in reality and finding another home for an 18inch fish probably won't be easy. Will it be worth the hassle in the end to do what's right for him?

Longhorns require a 250 gallon tank or larger. Its better to buy fish that fit your tank. What if you cant upgrade? What if you cant catch him without tearing down your scape? You will forgo this future stress if you stick to fish that can grow into your tank not outgrow it.

I would enjoy the cow fish while you can. IMO they don't grow very fast in a small environment based on my experience with fish. It will take a long time to outgrow your tank. When and if it does get too big, you can get a larger tank.

Honestly, I would return him now. They are extremely hard to rehome, and if he gets stressed out he will nuke the tank.

I've had one two years and hasn't grown more than a cm. admittedly my tank is a decent size anyway. I run a fair bit of carbon and hand feed him. There isn't a lot in my tank which would stress him unless I want to rescape.

50g is extremely small of a tank. Return it sooner rather than later.
