Looking For A Good Camera That Doesn't Break The Bank

Around 10 years go I bought a 3.4 megapixel camera that was a higher end model back then. Well, at least when it comes to megapixels anyway.

I know nothing about cameras and my wife is bugging me for a new camera. I'd like to get one that takes some basic shots like a point and shoot but I'd also love the ability to take some nice shots of my reef.

Not looking for anything too fancy or expensive, just something to fit the bill. I've read the stickies and such at least twice but still could use some guidance.

I don't want to spend $200 and I don't want to spend $1,500. I was hoping for something that could easily replace my point and shoot and take good pictures on the fly without much fuss. At the same time I'd like to be able to take some nicer pics if the situation arises.

Canon G12.

It's still a P&S but can go full manual, if necessary, and it shoots RAW.

excellent recommendation. For something with very much the same inners but not quite as much physcal bulk look at the "S" series by Canon. I have the S90 and love it (there is an S95 now). When I am too lazy to carry the DSLR I grab this. Being used to manual modes and shoting RAW it still is familar and easy to work with for me.

If you're looking for a DSLR, maybe a Nikon D3100. One thing to look for if you'll be photographing corals is some ability to tweak the white balance.
