Im looking to get into taking quality pictures of my tank, fish, corals and so forth. right now i have just a simple point and shoot digital camera. I was looking into get a good camera but have no experience i dont know what my options are. I dont want to go crazy expensive but dont want to go cheap on it. i guess my price range would be like 2-400 to start. Anyone have any options or advice.

On that budget for a body and lens the Canon 20D + 50mm f/1.8 would be hard to beat. I don't like the "Rebel" bodies (Xsi, T1i, T2i, etc...) simply because their controls are awkward compared to all of the larger bodies.

I would spend a little more and pick up the 40D... great camera for the money.

^^^ This

Rebel's are to small I find. I have a 30D and love it to death, I use it as a back up camera to my 1D mk2. You can find a used 20 or 30D with a 50mm f/1.8 for around that budget.
I buy any gear that I have on POTN, lots of reliable sellers on there and good prices.

Check out the buy sell section!

Why not consider a high-end point and shoot? People really like the Canon G12. I think I'm going to finally order mine today. I use to have a film SLR, lots of lens' to go with it (this is some time ago)... and I'm just not interested in pouring that kind of money into the equipment again. So I've decided on a 'professional' point and shoot. Worth considering...

Enough talking... I did it. Price on the Canon G12 had been dropping since it came out last month. Best price I found (today) was Amazon... with free one day shipping. I'll post some pics when I figure out how to use it!

Robojet any luck, with that new camera of yours?
Need to get a new camera myself

I've been snapping some random shots... I definitely do not have it dialed in yet! I've been sick all week, and haven't been up to reading through the manual completely, so far I've only gotten through the basic first 3 chapters. My general feeling right now is that I have selected a very good camera (for my needs). I used to be into photography with lots of lens, etc... (long time ago) and I didn't really feel like getting back into that hobby! I have enough of them already, so a professional grade point and shoot fit the bill. Hopefully I'll be feeling better in a couple of days and can spend some more time with it. I'll post pics when I can show something worthy...

So, I've been spending a little time taking some shots and learning how to use the camera. I am having a problem, where I am taking RAW + JPEG, and when I go to edit the RAW, I am not getting that crisp photo I was expecting when I crop/zoom. Seems to be good focus - until I download and try to edit. Hmmm...

Here's one I've taken that wasn't too bad... but should be better...
