Hi! I just got back from a fantastic trip to the Big Island (Hawaii), and I was lucky enough to get to take a tour of the Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm. I have to plug these guys - they captive-breed all their horses, and they breed 18 different species now. They also sell food, and the horses are BEAUTIFUL. As part of the tour, I got to hold one - or rather, he came over and wrapped his tail around my hand!!!
The best part is that their horses are really healthy, extremely well adapted to aquarium life (way better than wild-caught), and they're not taking seahorses (which are endangered badly) from the wild. The outfit was started by a couple of biologists who were working in Costa Rica & were itching to do something about the drastically declining seahorse populations. I'm thinking of setting up a horse tank myself, and this is the only place that I'll get them from. They breed them for color and size, and they are truly lovely animals. Check 'em out at
www.seahorse.com. They have lots of info on care, feeding, & breeding. The babies were really really cool. The problem with wild-caught (aside from the horrific irresponsiblity of taking endangered animals from the wild) is that they only eat live food, but the OR seahorses are already trained to eat frozen foods.
You can check out my other posts to see that I don't work for Ocean Rider.
