Looking for Equipment

Hi all,

I've started a list of things I need to get to set up the 180g and while some stuff I prefer to buy new, there's a few things I figured I'd check and see if available here.

-55g undrilled tank
-Mag12
-Skimmer rated for at least 180g
-Any old regular flourescent hoods like are used over freshwater tanks. A couple 36" ones on each end of the 72" canopy would probably work perfect.


As far as buying new, I plan to grab heaters, a couple powerheads, rock, sand, a light for chaeto and two Megaflow 600gph overflow accessory kits over the next couple of months. Oh, and more salt... lol :)
 
Mel, you might want to consider regular 48" shoplights from HD. They work great and are cheap. Use the 6500k bulbs and a few actinic bulbs and your good to go. Just stagar a few of them to cover the tank.
 
Mel i have a full box of daylight bulbs if you go that way you can have a few..these bulbs are supposed to be like daylight and use very little power..let me know.
 
I have a bunch of waterproof vho endcaps you can have I would assume they are the same as normal output and would allow a water tight seal
 
Mel I have used and am currently using shoplights on my tank. I have not had any issues in the 4 years or so that I have been using them.

By the way the 6500k bulbs I mentioned are the daylight bulbs in the light blue package at HD
 
Great info John. Think I'm gonna head to one of the box stores tonight to see what options they've got. I'm thinking that would work perfectly. :thumbsup:

I might have a canopy with who and t5 lights for you. Lights could come out. Maybe other stuff too. Have to look around.
 
If you do come across something G, feel free to pm me w/ info and price. :) Since it's being set up as a FOWLR I'm mainly just looking for enough light to see the fish. Don't want to go too strong and end up with an algae farm. I'm curious about bulb options with the shop fixtures... I'm a big fan of blue wavelengths as it seems more natural to me for undersea viewing. If the only options for those are the daylight bulbs, I may try to supplement with some actinics to get what I'm going for.
 
Is that the one that's 48" tall and rated for up to 1200 gallons? I'll have to check this evening but I don't know if I've got 48" of height inside the stand or not.
 
That may work out excellent. I plan to grab a bunch of the dry Marco or BRS rock as the holes are excellent for 'scaping with acrylic rods but will definately need to incorporate some live rock into the mix to help seed things. When you get a chance feel free to pm me how much you'd be looking to get for some of your live rock. No hurry though as this tank probably won't be getting wet for at least another month. :)
 
Mel, Im going to be toying with some blue led christmas lights over my fowlr tank. I picked up a string of 100 blue led lights for $6. They should be in next week, I'll let you know if they are worth using.

I've got around 100 lbs. of live rock that's been cooking in my basement for a year and a half. (sitting in a brute can of water w/ powerheads)

It's from my original 75 gallon setup and much of it is DIY.

If you'd like, I can weigh it up and snap some pictures for you. Price will be extremely cheap.
