Looking for external pump

It depends on how much you can run through your sump. How much you want to run through your sump. How much your overflows can handle, what your head loss is and of course how much you want to spend.
This will help some with head loss:

As far as pumps:
Genx - cheapest decent pump... sometimes you'll get a lemon but if you get a good one it should last for years.
Pan World/Blueline - very good pumps at a decent price
Iwaki - built like tanks and excellent longevity but a bit noisier than Pan Worlds. Also the most expensive.
Sequence - seal (ones that have a seal that needs to be changed every couple of years) pumps that have a great rep.

I hadn't heard about the seals on the Sequence pumps... Good info Chris... :) You have just made one of my decisions easier... ;)

what about heat transfer? I am currently pulling my quiet one due to heat transfer issues.
Typically internal pumps transfer more heat per watt because they are water cooled not air cooled like most of the external pumps. The external pumps will transfer heat though with the higher the wattage transferring more heat.
What size Quiet One do you have?
