Looking for goldflake angel experiences

With so many showing up on dealers' list and getting into the hands of hobbiest, I would like to know what the census is on their compatability with invertebrates in a reef aquarium. If they nipped at anything desireable, please state what it was and hos destructive/persistant the fish was in nipping the item/items. Also, include specifics, like fish size, tank size, length of time the fish was kept, before it began nipping, and your feeding regime' and food choices.
Thanks in Advance

I was entertaining the idea of keeping one in a reef. It seems all of the medium sized angels that are sometimes kept in reefs, such as the majestic, regal, flagfin, and goldflake, all eat zoas. I suppose most people value their sps most, but for me, I could handle a few wayward nips at an sps, if it wasn't constant, but I would not want a fish that would clear out all of my zoanthids. I understand some don't, but I WOULD get the one that ate every zoanthid in sight, just b/c that is what I don't want to happen...lol

I have a mature Goldflake and it's a beautiful, personable fish. However, it has eaten all my zoas (which I didn't mind as they were rampant) so it is unlikely you would like one in your reef.

Now if only zoas could have a personality, blind you with 14k gold flakes, eat out of your hands, wow a crowd of non-reefers, then perhaps the choice would be tough........:D

LOL, good point, but what else does one use to cover the bases of their live rock in a deeper tank?

Get 400w MH's and have a base of montipora:D

Oh...and of course , a Goldflake

I will have 400 watt halides, more than likely, but I may just get the 250s,b/c all of my sps will be near the top anyway and I want to cover the base of the rock structure with shrooms, zoos, and encrusting polyps and it will save a lot of electricity. I do want clams at the bottom thought and it is a 27'' deep tank, so I may have to go with 400s......oh no...now I'm confused..LOL I already have a stock list and I was settled, now I have gone and opened a whole new can of worms. Build to accomodate the angel or stick with my original plan...........brain cramping...must think later.

I have had my GF for 3 months now. He is about 4 inches and is kept in a 350 reef. He is a super fish. Great personality, eats everything with gusto, flake, pellet, mysis, nori and stands up to some of the bigger tangs in the the tank. He has not eaten any zoas. I have noticed him nip an sps. But it my be because I have a few that have algae on them, unfortunately. I am not convinced he is completely reef safe at this point. However, he is such a wonderful fish I think I can accept any potential downside

yes these fish are awesome. Mine is the most active fish in the tank. he makes my tangs look like they are moving like turtles. Never stops~~~

Good to see you back on the threads Thor
How long have you had the Goldflake? Does it bully your male Geni. Mine has the occasional swipe.

I love mine. It is about 4 inches, and I WISH he would eat my Zoas. He's in a 180 and I've had him for almost a year.

no not all. The goldflake doesn't pay attention to anyone. The only fish that bullies my goldflake is my regal angel. She lets her know who is boss when hes on her side of the tank.
Thanks Bangkokmatt!

As Matt said, montis are great if given enough light. Personally, my SPS shades most of the bottom so montis dont have a chance.....BUT its the perfect environment for chalices, cyphastrea, favias (and the like), dendros, tubastrea, etc. There are many famalies/species you could place there; Leathers too I didn't mention.

Personally, I HATE zoas, but they ran rampid in my last SPS tank and took out a few of my favorite colonies from the base up. They actually grew up through the rocks, and onto the bottom of the SPS, causing STN and eventually death of the colonies. Luckily I caught it early enough to save a frag or two of each.

Please make sure you treat for internal worms and flukes as they almost always come in with them, especially adults. Freshwater dips and QT in Prazi Pro are a must in my book with these angels. I learned the hard way and lost one myself to internal worms. Tim
