Looking for live rock/live sand

Hey everyone! I'm finally making the swap to saltwater and I'm in the process of setting up my first reef tank after years of freshwater/planted tanks. I have the gear but I'm looking to acquire some live rock and live sand locally.(50ish lbs of LR, and 25ish LS) If you have extra, are going to be tearing a tank down etc let me know and I'll buy it off you. I think I've read a common price is $2 a lb for LR? Not sure on LS. I was referred here by a friend and I'm in the Fairfield area. Thanks and I look forward to being a part of this community.

I got some old dried up rock laying around somwhere and i can give u some pieces from my sump to seed ur tank....i think its between 60-80lbs

You are better off buying dry sand then having to deal with someone's used sand. IMO carib Sea Special Grade is a good choice. Good luck and enjoy reefing!

Sleepy, that would be awesome! do you have any pics of it? I need to start thinking about how I want to place them... I have a 24x24x18 cube and I'm leaning towards a high point on one side and maybe a smaller island on the other.

Diana, Thanks for the advice. I've found about 20lb or so of used sand but it's been sitting in a bucket outside for the last 3 weeks drying out. I'm thinking of giving that a good rinse and then putting another 20lbs of sand from my lfs in to kick start it. I know the tank it came from and it's clean so I think it should be ok.
Thanks again!

Even if I get some of the sand you mentioned? Special Grade Arag-Alive! Live Reef Sand - CaribSea? or can you get that dry as well?

Carabsea live sand might be best if soaked in RO water first. Some of the extra hitchhikers can be a major pain. I have some rock that I bought dry. I've been curing it for about 2 months. I "seeded" it with biospira. No hitchhikers getting in my new tank. I should have some leftover when I finally get my tank setup. One piece is a nice flat table. All from BRS.

hmmm, I'll have to keep that in mind, I haven't read a whole lot yet on live sand so this is all good info, I would have assumed the bagged variety would have been ok but at this point it seems like I should lean more towards dry and let it come to life once in the tank.

Thanks for the offer aquaman007, sleepy22 hooked it up with enough dead live rock and some seeder rock from his sump that I'm up and running. Just got it all cleaned and placed today and am starting the cycle now.
