Hello all, im looking for a few bags of reef sand, somthing simular to southdown play sand. I was told that you can't get southdown anymore. what are u guys using locally? I checked my locaal homedepot and walmart, but nothing calcium based.

go to ecoreef ... its on atlantic just west of the intercoastal on the south side... i think they charged me $10 for 40lbs .... i belive it was $15 for non club members

make sure you wash and sift the sand before use

why is that? is it not reef safe?

You can wash it or not wash it. Either way is up to you. It has a lot of silt(aragonite, calcium carbonate dust) in it. If you decide not to rinse it. It will take longer to settle. If you do decide to rinse it you are washing a lot of calcium and aragonite out of the sand.

i put it in a pillowcase and filled it up with water, stired it up... i did this a few times and by morning it had already settled ;)

nonwash believer!

though, i cover my sand with garbage bags first, then fill the tank up, so theres barely any sand storms to begin with.
