help!

i have a clam, and it didn't open for a couple days, now last nite it was laying on its side and i could see up through the bottom of if. i think the foot came off! there was a clump of cottony looking stuff beside it. it looks like its retracted even more this morning. is there anything i can do??

Once you can see through them, and they no longer retract they are a goner...

How long have you had it for???

FW dips can help, but if the clam is borderline anyway, it will likely kill it. I've had clams with holes in the base/near the foot survive but most don't. It is an indication of improper harvesting.

FW dips can help

Any reason for this??? I'm just curious... I've never dipped a clam...

It seems to kill off protozoans and/or other irritating "critters" that can annoy a clam and eventually cause it to succumb to the infection or stress. Many clams are exposed at low tide, and they get rained on, so the FW doesn't hurt them any unless they're already on the verge of perishing.

if you think it is a goner, you need to take it out of the tank - watch out - they really stink. I had one that closed for a few days and it was completely gone in about 5 days - they go quick!
