Lost fish today

So 6 months in and lost my first fish today, one if my red spot Cardinal fish. the other 5 all still look healthy (the one that has gone didn't look wrong, although I noticed one wasn't feeding as much as the others over the last few days.

Anyway, the cuc finished it before I had any chance to remove it. I know how it's possible for fish to "disappear" now... Crazy how fast they went through it.

I'll keep a close eye on the others now and increase my testing to monitor nitrate.

Is there anything else I should be thinking about?

Thank you.

Join the club main... Consider it collateral damage....

This won't happen once you get some notches on your belt. (time) That was kind of a bad way of putting it, but it was the truth... GL.

Sorry to hear that. I've actually lost two fish over quite a few months. The first (yellow wrasse) I don't think was healthy to begin with and the other (clown goby) just disappeared one day, not sure what happened...all others have been good and healthy.

i'm sorry for your loss.
fish can tolerate higher nitrate level than corals can. it's ammonia that's toxic.

Thanks everyone. It was more my corals and the potential other effect last of high levels of nitrate I was worried about. I'm watching ammonia too and about to do a 20% water change for good measure.

I also always feel compelled to immediately do a large water change after any fish dies.

But sometimes fish just die without explanation. A little filefish that I had for several months just disappeared one night. My wife could not comprehend how a fish could just vanish. But they do, and it's very very frustrating. A helpless feeling to not know what to 'fix' in a hobby where we are constantly looking to fix things.
