lost too many jumpers

I would like to prevent loosing any more fish to suicide jumps. I have metal halides for lighting. They are on legs (not suspended)

I have heard about the plastic "egg crate". Will that block too much light? Where do you get it? Is it easy to cut to size or do I need to get it cut?

thanks in advance!

you can buy it at lowes or Home depot or a lighting store. cost is about $10.00 each, size is 4'x2' cutting is easy I use side cutters.

as far a blocking the light I don't know.

I think "egg crate" is a light diffuser. I'm not sure of just how much lighting you would loose from it though. I would like to know to, I think it would keep jumpers in very well.

Egg crate or similar type of material is what most reefers use. You may loose some lighting value but not enough to matter.
But i wonder are these older established fish that are leaving or the newly added ones? And do you have the recommened amount of LR and is your tank at its stocking limit ?

I'm wondering why you have "jumpers". I'd be more concerned about why they are bailing out than how to keep them in.

I tried just straight eggcrate on my tank but it blocked too much light... So I cut the center out and hot-glued 'hardware cloth' in the center, it does not block any light.

Thats 2. :)

I am not overstocked. I have a 75 gallon with two ocellarus, 1 cardinal, 1 clown gobey.

The jumpers I had in the past were: a yellow head jawfish and an established clown that loved hanging at the top of the tank. My newest clown ( a black one) seems to love the top as well. this is the one I am afraid will jump. Do they jump because they get scared by other fish?

My next fish choice is going to be a royal gramma. What do you think??

I used egg crate (light diffuser) on my tank and still lost a couple of fish. A diamond watchman and a small six line. Its certainly helps, but with fish that have reputation for jumping, something with a smaller weave or something solid is needed.

I use glass tops on my tank. Some people will complain that it causes heat problems, but with an open sump and some fans, it has been and is continuing to work for me.

I am amazed that you can still loose a fish throught the egg crate. The glass seems foolproof, but knowing me and how i have a need to be "in the tank" frequently....it would be dangerous!

I am going to give the egg crate a try
