LPS lighting

well assuming you mean a standard 120 from your signature i would say 250watters or even 175 watter if you dont want clams, anemones, or sps at all.

watts per gallon is a useless measurement. what is the depth of the tank?

I agree, this measurement doesn't mean anything anymore; what lighting you will need will be based on what you want to keep, and the depth of your tank (the deeper the tank, the stronger the light you will need to punch through those extra inches of water). I would definitely go with the metal halides. A 175w ought to be okay IMO, you would just need to keep the more light loving SPS up top, and the LPS on the lower and middle tiers of your tank (depending of course on what kind of LPS). You can go with a 250w halide to be sure.
