LR question

i have LR that's been sitting in a bin for months with no circulation. is it safe to recycle this stuff? it seems to be covered in white film. tia

Rinse it off real good with RO/DI water and you should be fine

Yes, everything is most likely dead on your "liverock" but it can very easily made "live" again...it will just take time.

Change all the water, put a powerhead in there, heater (in the winter) and some form of lighting to encourage growth. Also seed it with some other liverock from a friends tank or even new pieces from the fish store.
It will all grow back eventually but it'll take a few months at least

If its been sitting that long with no circ. in this heat, im sure its dead now. I'd rinse or spray the rocks down to get all the junk off it and buy some new live rock to put on top and seed the older stuff.

at least a few months....the longer the better
You are not actually "curing it" (in this case) you are trying to bring life back into the rock. The goal here is to re-populate your rock with the beneficial organisms that are needed

If you want to speed things up, I would throw in some livesand, macro algae, rock rubble,.....anything, as long as it is from someone's well-established tank. Especially if there is amphipods, coepepods, snails, bristleworms, and other lifeforms in the above-mentioned items.

I would do the following:

1) take the rock out and dump out all the old water
2) rinse both the rock and the container very well
3) inspect for nuicance algae, molds, etc. (scrub bad areas)
4) Add new saltwater so all the rock is totally submerged
5) Add powerhead to container to provide circulation
6) Add a refugium light or someother light source
7) Add livesand, rock rubble, Chaeto, etc. from another well-established tank (at least 3 years old) to "seed" your rock.
8) Optional: add new purchased liverock (fish store, internet)
9) Optional: add power filter (any kind) and protein skimmer
10) Be patient: the longer you wait the better

By-the-way,
don't forget to add top-off water to maintain salinity levels. this is just as important as a regular tank.

I'm sure there is someone near West LA that can donate some rock rubble and other goodies to help gettcha started.

I got a bunch of dead rock from my uncle that was sitting for about 2 years....I rinsed it really good with ro/di water it then tossed it in my tank...I havent seen any bad things happen but what could happen? I have about 180 lbs of live rock in the tank and threw in about 20 lbs of dead washed rock
