Im having problems with my sump. i had 4 cuts now. id like to unsharpen/smoothen the glass, any ideas?

i tried sand paper but doesnt do much. it will probably take me hours/days to smoothen it. how does the professional do it? any suggestions?

thanks.

You trying this by hand? :debi:

I'd use a belt sander if you have one. Read and understand the risks involved with using a power tool, and know that there is no more important safety device than these, safety glasses.

GL, and HTH

yep. belt sander

id recommend doing this before assembly tho as you will not be able to get into corners and will leave razor sharpo edges.

aluminum oxide belts, 150-220 grits will work fine.

Try a random orbit palm sander. It's harder to let it get out of control than a belt sander if you're not used to using one. Cheaper if you don't have either one too.

Sand paper takes a long time and depending on your cut you may end up tearing the paper before you even start to file it down. emery paper glued to a wood block works ok but takes a while. I use a specialized tool for finishing my glass edges but you can also use a silicon carbide grinding bit for a dremel with a bit of water or glass cutting oil. Some HD or Lowe's may carry a diamond coated file that work quite well for tight spaces. Just wear your safety glasses!

will try this one and see how long it will take. if it really takes a while, im going to the next suggestion.

Just cut some tubing and put it over the glass edges.

hmm... gives me an idea. i cant put tubes on the side corners. But im definitely going to try silicone. im going to put a lot of silicone on the edges. doesnt really matter if it turns out ugly, it's hidden anyway.

thanks for all the suggestions.

You could also use the plastic 'corner' that they use for drywall. Home depot or Lowes have it in the drywall section. You can cut the extra off with scissors and just silicone it on. There is no reason why you cannot make it look exactly like the tank top rim.

Buy a small sharpening stone from your local hardware store...they use them for sharpening chisels and knife blades....costs a couple of dollars.

Use the stone at 45 degrees and it easily removes the sharp edges....draw it lengthways along the sharp glass edge.

i didnt want to buy any of those machine stuff but it's good to know.

after much thought, i decided to use a duct tape. there i fixed it.
