Mag pump 24

What is better running this pump inside or outside the sump. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to either? I have read that running it externally that you have a chance of the pump losing prime is this true?

mag pumps MUST be submerged. The major problem with them is heat and the mag24 is a major heat monster.

As long as the pump is mounted below the water level it will not loose prime. Not a bad pump, if your looking for submerged. If you are looking for an external, look at the ReefFlo.

Internally you run this risk as well. You just have to watch the water level. Xenon is right - they do put off some heat. However, I tend to disagree with most on the quality. I ran one on a tank of mine for almost two years with no problems. They are a little loud though.

As far as advantages or disadvantages - yes to both :) Just like everything else, it depends on what you want to do. Most of your higher quality pumps tend to be external. Most do not like the idea of having a 120v device sitting submerged in the water - some worry about leaching - some like to drill holes and install bulkheads :) I like the submersible idea, as long as heat is not an issue. I usually cover any exposed screws with aquarium sealer.

Mags are noisy and power hogs which equates to heat generation due to inefficiencies. Other pumps pump the same or more water for much lower wattage and less heat gain. Mags are not recommended for external use but there are a lot of them in use that way. If you mean an up and over suction to the pump then yes you run the risk of breaking suction and reuuning dry. If you want to go external get the sump drilled. Up and over is a very inefficient way to do it as centrifugal pumps are not self priming nor do they lift water.
