Mag9.5 Return Pump

Hey guys!

I got a used Mag9.5 from a local reefer. I want to use it as my returning pump, but I have 2 questions before going ahead:

1. Can I use it externally?

2. The screws rust for some reason 0.o I would expect them not to rust since these pumps are submergable but...somehow they rust. What should I do if I decide to submerge it?

TIA

Yes they can be used externally but they seem to be a bit noisy...

I would go to the hardware store and replace them with stainless....will stop the rusting.

I personally dont think it is the best pump to use as a return. If it were me I would sell it and get an Eheim 1262....very quite, not as much heat and I believe more power effecient......

vanmo, thanks for reassuring! About the noise, where does it come from? From the inside of the pump or from the vibration of the pump?

A mag 9.5 will not create too much noise. I ran a Mag36 as a return pump before going to a reeflo. I got it pretty quiet but it was still loud. Compared to a mag 9.5 you wont have a noise problem. They are great pumps, built like a rock

I totally agree I think these pumps are built like a rock I have 2 9.5's swap them in and out for cleaning every 4 months or so. I do run mine in the sump though so I don't know how loud they would be if run externally. when purchased they came with a foam pad to sit the pump on.

they will be louder when external. Be creative with foam and you may beat the noise. In the sump you wont notice any noise. I run a mag 18 for my skimmer insump and can not hear it. The mag36 was another story

I have one running external and One in the sump. I can hear the external one if the light fans are off but just barely.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

It sounds like if I use it as insump, there won't be any noise. I want to use it insump anyway because I won't have to drill the glass sump. Problem is the screws rust. What am I to do?

Same here!

I've had a Mag 12 running for 7 years and replaced the impeller once. I tried a Mag 9.5 but gave it up because it was very noisy by comparison. Strange. The Mag12 is a good pump and keeps on running without blocking up. I have only cleaned it on average about once/year in my tank.

Replace the screws with stainless. If they still rust, replace them again in a few years.

Many problems have been reported when these pumps have been used in-line. I tried and it pulled air for the wire input. It created microbubbles in my return line which led to the display tank. Great little pumps but i do not recommend you use them externally. I am still running this pump as of now but i am soon purchasing the iwaki in its place.

I've been using one in-sump for a while, not loud.
However, I did make little silicone 'feet' for it to limit vibration on the glass .. I simply dabbed some silicone around the corners that might touch the bottom or sides of the tank. I think it is a better solution than using a pad.

That's a good idea, smp.

I've been using mine in my sump as well. I ran one in-line for about 3 years until the impeller went bad. It has run for four in the sump with no further problems. It runs cooler in the sump because it transfers more heat into the water than when it runs in-line.

Thanks, but I can't take the credit. I read that somewhere on RC when I was doing my own pump research, so thank RC :)

I think They are great pumps and used them all the time, just not the most effecient pump.

no not effecient at all. I use the mag 2.5 externally for the calcium reactor and its great, but I dont think I would use any larger model externally
