The method I use is a 3 gallon tank next to my sump. I don't have plumbing anywhere near my tank so I have to fill the 3g tank every few days with RO/DI water. I add my kalk directly to the 3g of freshwater. There is a power head submersed in the 3g tank and it is connected to a float valve in my sump. I never have any fluctuations with my salinity but I still check it a few times a week.
I make compensations during water changes. I read the SG of the tank prior to a WC and if it's a bit low, I'll add enough extra salt water to prevent the ATO from kicking on for a day or so.
