Making a 72g corner tank rimless?

I have a 72g corner tank made with 3/8" glass. The top trim is not continuous. Each panel has a separate piece of trim which is not connected to its neighbour. Would it be safe to remove the trim from the front 3 panels? The front middle panel is 28" and the adjoining panels are 10". I guess my main question is; does a trim piece that's not connected to anything but the glass panel it is sitting on provide any structural strength to the glass (by way of the silicone along its length I suppose)?
I did perform a search, but was unable to find results pertaining to a corner tank with a noncontinuous top trim.
