Making a simple water meter out of rigid tubing

I have 2 65g containers in my garage that I use for RO and salt mixing.
I recently wrapped them in insulation to help them maintain temps even in the cold winter.
The problem is now I can't tell what the water level is inside the containers. I cut a hole in the side and tried shining a light into it, but was unable to see the inner water level.

So I'm thinking about taking some rigid tubing and creating a water meter with it. I plan to take the 90 fitting off each container and replace it with a T then place a 90 on the unused end of the T and a length of rigid tubing as long as the container is high. Then when the container is full, the pressure should push water into the rigid tub, giving me a idea of water level.

Does this sound right?

This should work fine as long as you don't cap off the top of the riser. Quite often you will see industrial tanks with a similar setup. The riser is normally clear or glass but have a 90 bend back into the tank at the top.

Cheers
