mangrove question

i got this mangrove root while walking on the beach today. figured id give it a shot in my fuge. is it the kind that okay to be in tanks? i was wondering should i put it in the sand? should i let it plant itself? is it okay to put it in the sand fully submerged in the water?

Sand would be ideal. They say, correct me if I am wrong, to prop it up so that the top is out of the water and the roots are submerged.

the problem is, that it isnt tall enough for the top of it to be out of water if i put it into the sandbed. should i do it anyways?

You would need to do some sort of DIY tank that is maybe in your show tank or in your fuge. Maybe even hook a second tank to your system that would be your mangrove tank. Low flow, short side walls, could even be a plastic container?!?

This is how I do mine.... Suspended in my 40g Fuge.

Believe it or not I have one growing in my overflow!

can we see a pic of this please :D

no, not using it for nutrient export. just thought it'd be something cool to have.. and my buck was well spent as i found it on the ground. :D

Unfortunately I don't have a good digital camera to take a pic of my mangrove but it looks exactly like the ones Mr James has posted. I tried it as an experiment. Most of them started looking pretty sad so I got rid of them. About a mo later I saw something white in my filter and it was a mangrove that I had missed. It floats on the top of my display tank with the roots going into the overflow. Not really expecting it to do anything. It just looks cool. It has new shoots on it and doing well. I am sorry I am unable to post a pic rt now. But I am telling the absolute truth.

awesome stuff.. well we'll see what happens. I have mine resting in the fuge overflow teeth so the bottom is getting water and the top is getting air.

I have about 25 of them in my fuge. Its 230 gallons and when I first put them in they were all submergered for like 3 months and everyone of them has grown out of the water.
