Mangroves vs. Caulerpa

I'd like to add either Caulerpa or Mangroves to my fuge strictly for nutrient export (specifically nitrates).

Are Mangroves as or more efficient than Caulerpa in nutrient uptake? Are there any other benefits or drawbacks to either one?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dustin

Unless you have alot of them mangroves are definaetly slower at nutrient uptake. Mangroves also use magnesium so this will need to be monitored and dosed whe necessary.

Caulerpa is a fast grower and can quickly use up available nutrients. It is believed that once caulerpa is running low on available nutrients that it triggers a spawning event ( referred to as going sexual ) This can pollute your tank. Also caulerpa releasses toxins into the water column which can have an effect on other tank inhabitants.

If what you're looking for is a good low maintenance algae which can quickly bind nutrients then cheato is probably the best one for your purpose.
